Carbon disclosure and global decarbonization: the case of CDP

This working paper (available here) is part of a larger project on pathways towards decarbonization led by Steven Bernstein and Matthew Hoffmann at the Environmental Governance Lab. Drawing on interviews with key informants, I find that CDP (formerly known as the Carbon Disclosure Project) has played a leading role in normalizing, scaling-up and entrenching the practice of carbon disclosure in the firms with which it interacts and in the broader investment community. The paper analyzes how the CDP has done this and highlights lessons from this intervention for other initiatives seeking to influence the practices and behaviour of market actors. My next working paper, due out this summer, will compare the dynamics taking place within the corporate carbon disclosure and corporate carbon pricing movements.
